What is Child Find?
Last time, we talked about IDEA (the federal law that is the foundation for how special education services are delivered in schools today). An important part of IDEA is something called Child Find.
Child Find states that schools must identify, locate, and evaluate children starting at age 3 who may need special education. Getting help early matters because it sets kids up with the right supports at the right time. Early intervention strengthens learning and development, so children don’t have to wait until kindergarten to get the tools they need.
If you ever have concerns about your child’s learning or development, you have the right to request an evaluation through your school starting at age three. For children under three, the state offers early intervention services that provide direct services to families. Once a child turns three, the district takes over. Child Find exists to make sure families don’t have to wait for help – support is available now!
