How Does a School Board Work?

The Board of Education is the governing body responsible for setting the direction of all our schools in our district. Here’s how this works:

  • The Board consists of 9 elected members. Each member serves a three-year term. These are volunteer positions - board members do not receive any pay for their time on the Board. Elections are held annually during the November general election. If there’s a vacancy, the Board appoints someone to fill the role until the next general election.

  • The Board establishes policies that guide the district’s operations and educational programs. Specifically, it:

    • Approves the district budget, ensuring that our resources are effectively allocated;

    • Reviews and approves curricula to ensure they meet educational standards;

    • Hires and evaluates the Superintendent;

    • Reviews recommendations for hiring and firing staff; and

    • Provides a way for community members to share input and concerns.

  • The Board holds regular meetings, typically on the second Tuesday of each month. Meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend and participate. Meetings are recorded so that community members can stay in the loop even if they aren't able to attend.
